Skills Broker Standard

Programme Aim

To become a Skills Broker, you need to be accredited against the Skills Broker Standard and the Core Competencies (NVQ Level 4 Business Support). This Skills Broker module has been designed to complement the Core Competencies. Its aim is to ensure that accredited Skills Brokers delivering the Train to Gain service are: credible to employers, effective in assisting employers to meet their training needs and capable of adding public value by helping employers see the value of sustained investments in skills, in line with their business goals.

Skills Broker Standard Framework

There are 14 elements within the Standard which can be categorised into three headings:

  1. what you need to show;
  2. what you need to know;
  3. what experiences you will bring.

Each of the 14 elements are detailed by a number of indicators. A Skills Broker would be required to provide evidence of their effectiveness against each of these indicators.

Who are these qualifications for?

This qualification is for those working in the role of Skills Broker on Train to Gain contracts. It is also suitable for anyone who is in an employer engagement role, working with a training provider.

The qualification is in two parts and comprises the Core Competencies for business support (NVQ Level 4 Business Support) and the Skills Broker ‘petal’, a set of additional competencies which have been identified as essential to the role.

Qualification Delivery

Every candidate will have a personal Assessor allocated to them. A typical journey towards achieving the qualification will involve:

  • An initial meeting with your assessor and review of your existing skills/current role
  • Observations by your assessor of you carrying out your role
  • Gathering evidence to demonstrate that you meet the requirements of the qualification
  • Working with your assessor and using self-study and development time efficiently
  • A final professional discussion.

You would normally be expected to complete the qualification within 12 months.

What about training and development?

The Skills Broker Standard is concerned with how you perform at work; it does not depend on attendance on specific courses or programmes of study. Where you find a gap in your knowledge or performance you decide for yourself and/or in consultation with your Assessor and your Manager, how you will fill that gap.

WMQC provides an optional programme of workshops as underpinning knowledge, including: Business Planning, Developing a business-focused training plan, Evaluating training, Investors in People, and HR for non-HR specialists.
